About Us

A coalition of farmers, buy local advocates and community leaders have developed a strategy to formalize and launch the Central Mass Grown:  Growing the Core of the Commonwealth.  This group working with Central Massachusetts Regional Planning Commission (CMRPC) and Montachusett Regional Planning Commission (MRPC) proposes to formalize itself as a nonprofit, to develop a database of farmers and local produce markets, restaurants, and other institutional consumers, to promote and build awareness of the local providers and markets through publication of directory (and web site) and to build strong connections though “Meet the Farmer” networking launch event.

Regional Buy Local Groups connect farmers to their surrounding communities and vice versa.  Pioneered in 1993 by people committed to the idea that knowing where your food comes from makes both good health and economic sense, Buy Local Group efforts have helped generate consumer awareness and demand for locally grown food products while at the same time improved logistical access to these important food/product sources.  Eight (8) Buy Local groups currently exist to promote the purchase of local agricultural products in local establishments across the state.  As demonstrated by the map, there is not currently a Buy Local organization focused on these efforts in Central Mass. While there are many organizations with related missions in Central Massachusetts including Chambers of Commerce, Worcester Local First, and municipal agricultural commissions, a stand-alone non-profit whose mission is focused on the Buy Local (Ag product) effort does not exist.  Our organization will be focused on the mission to promote the purchase of local agricultural products and to foster education about the benefits to health, community, economy, and environment.   This mission has many ancillary objectives and strategies and should not be diluted with broader goals of general economic development or too focused on narrower regions.

The purpose of Central Mass Grown is to engage in the following activities:

  • To educate farmers, consumers, and the general public on issues about and related to farming;
  • To support the advancement of knowledge and understanding of farms and farming and their benefits and relationship to the environmental, economic, nutritional and social well-being of persons within central Massachusetts and surrounding areas;
  • To promote the sales and purchase of agricultural products grown in Central Massachusetts to local markets, restaurants, retailers, aggregators, distributors, general consumers and others; and
  • To undertake such other activities as are consistent with the requirements of Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code of 1984, as amended, and regulations adopted thereto
